Male Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL) is characterised by a receding hairline and thinning crown. Hair follicles in the temple and mid-anterior part of the scalp tend to be most commonly affected.
- Stage I-III: Slight recession in the frontal and temporal regions. Hairlines become visible and there is some local hair loss on the crown.
- Stage IV-V: Advanced hair loss on the crown and frontal region. Seen from above, the area still having hair looks like a horseshoe.
- Stage VI: The depth of the frontal and crown areas has expanded sideward and backwards.
