What Causes Male Pattern Baldness? Understanding its Stages
Androgenetic alopecia is a common form of hair loss. In males it is known as Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) and in females, Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPB).
In MPB hair is lost in a well-defined pattern, beginning above both temples. Over time, the hairline recedes to form a characteristic “M” shape. In FPB, the hair falls out over the entire scalp.
The primary culprit of Androgenetic Alopecia is dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which comes from testosterone. DHT attacks the hair follicles, causing the hair to fall out and stop growing.Contributors to Androgenetic alopecia include smoking, stress, certain illnesses and thyroid or nutritional deficiencies.
There are 7 stages of Male Pattern Baldness on the Norwood Hamilton scale which helps to understand how severe your baldness is.
Stage 1: Shows little to no signs of baldness or a receding hairline.
Stage 2: Slight evidence of a receding hairline and hair thinning mainly around the temples and forehead.
Stage 3: Hair loss is noticeable. When pulling the hair back at the temples a curved ‘M’, ‘U’ or ‘V’ shape appears on the forehead. Natural hair products to strengthen hair follicles can be extremely beneficial at this stage.
Stage 3 Vertex: The hair at the top of the scalp becomes thin and shows a bald spot.
Stage 4: Bald spots are clearly evident from significant hair loss. The crown’s hair begins to thin out and the temporal hairline recedes further forming a ‘U’ shape when viewed from above.
Stage 5: Hair loss is more severe compared to stage 4. The hair loss progresses toward the back of the head.
Stage 6: The person is bald on the front and top of their head and there will be more hair loss on the sides of the head.
Stage 7:Sides of the head are affected until a thin hair ring encircles the head.
