It is not appropriate to use the term ‘balding’ for someone who is losing the hair due to genetic reasons. ‘Balding’ is a more appropriate term for patients who experience Alopecia Areata (complete hair loss in a small area). The more appropriate term for Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) and Female Pattern Baldness (FPB) is thinning within a known, definable area in which the hair strands gets thinner and shorter.

In MPB and FPB, each time the hair follicle goes through a growth cycle, the new hair that is produced is smaller and thinner. The cause for such smaller and thinner hair is genetic. This condition is passed down from either side of the family, however stressful and unhealthy lifestyles speed up this process.

Balding usually relates to bald patches appearing on the scalp caused most likely by Alopecia Areata. This condition is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system rejects the hair strand. In the majority of cases, the immune system settles down by itself, thus enabling the hair to grow back again. However, when the hair does not grow back and there is even further balding, there are various treatments that can help to combat this condition.
